Glen Finglas

The area around Brig o'Turk in the Trossachs was visited by Ruskin and Effie in 1853 along with the painter John Everet Millais, his brother and a friend of Effie's. The Ruskins stayed at the Schoolmaster's House whilst the Millais brother took rooms at the New Trossachs Hotel nearby. It is generally viewed that this trip marked the effective end of the Ruskins' marriage when Effie fell for Millais. The Ruskin's marraige was annulled the follwing year and a year after that Effie married Millais.
The site above is just up the valley from Brig o'Turk and is the location of the famous portrait of Ruskin by Millais. The painting is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (see the link below).
It is worth mentioning that while Ruskin refers to the river and valley as Glenfinlas it is currently referred to Glen Finglas.
The location of the portrait is best found by refering to the Woodland Trust Scotland leaflet (see link opposite). The walk through the woodland to the site is worth a visit quite apart from its Ruskin connection.
