Dear Ruskin friends
The idea for this website arose from my frustration when researching for my Ph.D in Ruskin's use of Media at the then Ruskin Library and Research Centre, Lancaster University (now known as The Ruskin). Ruskin Seminars were held weekly during term-time and those who had a much wider knowledge of Ruskin's life than I frequently mentioned places and events of which I had no knowledge. Eventually the embarassment of constant questions led me to try to find their references myself.
I realised that there was a wealth of information available but that some was not easy to find and decided to try to rectify that. Here is what I have collected so far.
The main map indicates the whole country with each region linked to a more detailed map with individual sites labelled. these labels link to individual pages.
A label with GREEN label indicates that the content is substantially complete and probably will not be added to.
A label with an ORANGE label means that there is some information that will be added to as I access it. Photographs will be added as and when I visit the location.
GREY means that there is minimal information and that I have more work to do and visits to make.
I failed to obtain any funding for this project and so its progress will be fairly slow and rely on family holidays and other visits. A scottish holiday in 2023 means that that province is fully documented though!
Please Note that I welcome comments, corrections and suggestions as to other locations.
References:
Where appropriate I will include a quotation. The standard source for Ruskin's work is the 39 volume set published by Ruskin's friend, George Unwin, Orpington, Kent. The full title is The Complete Works of John Ruskin in 39 volumes. The Library Edition. Edited by E.T. Cook and Alexander Wedderburn. Usually refered to as The Library Edition it is referenced as Works, shortenned to Wks. with the volume and page numbers. I will use that convention here, so, Wks. 28. 298-299 refers to volume 28, pages 298-299.
Please note that the complete set of volumes is available on The Ruskin website as searchable PDFs HERE.
My other main source for information, which I generally haven't referenced except for images, was Cook E. T. Homes and Haunts of John Ruskin, 1912, George Allen & Company, London. I will reference this as H&H. with the relevant page number.
Any other sources will be referenced separately as they occur.
